  Year End Concert 2008

It was a long awaited Saturday as Sher finally made her debut on stage. She was participating in her school's Kindergarden & Year End Concert. Practising diligently the dance step and action both at school and at home. She went to school early to get dressed and make-up while I gathered to take another coach to bring us to the Salvation Army HQ. There was an opening speech addressed to the audience. And I still remember the statement vividly "Your children won't stay tiny forever, cherish the moments." Sher's performance is the 3rd programme of the day where her class of N2 & K1 presented "Oh, be careful!" She just adores the stage, loving every minute of her presence under the limelight, swaying her hips and not forgetting the action too.
This is definitely an experience for her and I'm proud of my baby! Well done, darling!

  Busy Week
Shervon had loads of activities last week, with her birthday falling last Mon, then followed by the school Performance Rehearsel on Wed, attended Art Camp on Thur and Fri. The actual school performance was on Saturday and then a zoo trip with her Grandparents on Sunday. Looking at the schedule of her week's activities make me wonder how it will look when she starts Primary School in a few years time.
But, it also mark another milestone as my darling is no longer a toddler and move on to a Pre-schooler. She will start kindergarden next year and what a year she has achieved. From a reluctant kid who resisted school to a happy school goer who make friends easily and take instruction well from her teachers. I'm really proud of her and at the school performance last Saturday(shall blog on the school performance w pix), my eyes welled up tears of joy. I even told hubby that I will cry on her school graduation ceremony, at every stage of her life that she had achieved. I am really emotional when it comes to family. It's good that hubby completed his study project and could spent more time with us. He was home for dinner 2 weekdays of last week and I'm glad that he bonded well with Shervon, making full use of the quality time.

  Managing a Child's Temper Tantrum

Usually, sher displays her whining and tantrum towards me and her grandparents. But not to her Daddy as she knows he mean business when it comes to discipline. I need to remind myself not to give in as often as I should and always to balance the 'yes' and 'no', not forgetting the nurturing of creativity. It just ain't easy. She likes to push her boundary and I have to be consistent but there's other influence like her grandparents that spoilt her rotten which will deviate my parenting plan. I will use the naughty chair method adopted by Supper Nanny Show to discipline her and when all else fails, the spanking will take place. So far, it's very seldom that I will resort to such method as I want her to learn her lesson in an effective manner. Daddy is more of a spanker but I can see the early discipline is well in place and she is certainly much well behaved with Daddy around.

Mealtime is another boiling point which we always have to be patient with her. She can be good, finishing her food within half hour or worst in a hour. We hope that she will improve and finish up her meal quicker than an hour.

  Uncle's Wedding (Backdated)
My mummy's only brother who is my uncle tied the knot after 9 years of courtship... that's a really long time. I had an important role to play on the day as I've been tasked to be the flowergirl at the church solemnisation. I was excited about the role and prepared for it, practising at home the steps. At first, mummy said I looked like Liang Po Po as I took slow, snail pace. LOL

On the wedding day on Sunday, I was dressed in white (loaned fr Wenzel as mummy didn't want to spend on another dress) and refused to change to another outfit at grandma's house. Mummy was afraid I might messed up the dress by afternoon as church solemnisation was at 3pm. I threw tantrum and refused to talk to Mummy cos I wanted to look pretty. After a pep talk from Daddy, I managed to resume to my normal self. We waited at Grandma's house till 2pm before setting off to the church. At the church, I was cool and not nervous about the walk down the aisle... the procession went on smoothly. And Mummy said afterwards that she's so proud of me. I couldn't stop smiling. Uncle and Auntie took their vows and I could see their love for each other before God. I could sensed Grandma's joy and pride. Auntie wept tears of joy as they prayed together before taking communion. Afterwhich, we adjorned to the tea reception, had yummy egg sandwiches which is my favourite.

Then, we rushed back to Grandma's house to shower and change as we needed to travel to Sentosa for the dinner at Amara Sanctuary. Time was tight but we managed to get dressed and arrived at the hotel ard 7pm. The guests started to arrive and Mummy started to take snapshots of me posing and priming. I just love camera, while my muti-tasking mummy mingled with the relatives too. The night was long and by the time, we reached home, it was past midnight. Ohh... I'm too tired and the next day happens to be my birthday, I'm officially 4 years old!

Thank you, Mummy & Daddy (behind the camera)
Delish cake... finished it up!

I am exceptionally jubilant today, I'm 4 and Daddy & Mummy promised to celebrate my birthday at school. I can't wait for my friends to sing birthday song to me as everyone had their birthdays already. I even helped Mummy to pack the goodie bags to give away to my friends at school last Saturday. Mummy brought me to school and I cried when she said she's leaving to collect my birthday cake. I know I should'nt cry on my birthday... it took me awhile to resume my composure. Then, Daddy & Mummy turned up at school with the cake and goodie bags after we returned from our outdoor activities. When Mummy unveiled the cake from the box, my friends go,"WAAAAA, strawberry Shortcake!!" I felt so proud and lifted my head high... in my mind, I was wondering.. "see my birthday looks so nice." Daddy & Mummy was amused by my action and once the candles were lit, my friends sang birthday song, in English and Mandarin.. Daddy was the 'official photographer' of the day while mummy helped me to give my friends the goodie bag. Ms Wari cut me a big slice of cake and I finished it in no time, wiping the plate clean of the cream too. I said "Thank you" to both Daddy & Mummy and gave them a big hug.
After that, we headed to the theatre to watch Madagascar 2. Mummy knew that I enjoyed the 1st show of Madagascar and thought I might enjoy the sequel too. Overall, I had a good time and although I felt tired, I had fun! I knew that both my folks were tired too as they snooze off when we reached home. Daddy still got class in the evening.

Meeting point where we gather before the 'flight'
All ready... set, go!

Best spot for a better view

My company organised a charity initiative to bring the children from S'pore Aid Society to the Singapore Flyer last Saturday. Each of us were assigned to a child to take care throughout the 'flight'. I brought Sher along and let her experience this meaningful event. I must admit that she was well behaved throughout the day. She might felt overwhelmed by the large nos of children older than her as she was not her usual self, was pretty quiet and reserved. We mingled with the children and was glad that in some way or other, we had put cheer into them even it was only a few hours.
Overall, I am more grateful and appreciates what I have in my life, reminding myself not to take life for granted. For it is a blessing to have family always there for you. I love my family!

  SIA Girl
I'm the air stewardess serving you for today..
Coffee or Tea Sir?

Grandpa bought me this kebaya fr Chinatown, it fitted me perfectly as I sashayed away in it. The kebaya is the uniform for an SIA girl, do I qualify for the job? When mummy asked me what I would like to be when I grow up, I always answered "I want to be a doctor!" And the reason I gave it's because I can give injection to the patient. (Although I hated it)

Talk on Reading to your kids
Last Saturday, Sher's school held a talk about reading and selecting the right books for your kids. I thought it was quite a useful session as I picked some tips along the way. I firmly believe that reading to kids instill their love for books and will last a lifetime. And there's many pluses for picking up reading as a hobby, it also builds their foundation for the language which will come in handy for academic purposes too. I love reading and hope Sher does too. Now, whenever she feels bored, she will select her books and starts reading.

Tips for Reading to Preschoolers (Extracted from nea.org)

- Snuggle with your child with her favorite blanket or toys as you read.
- Read with expression using different voices for different characters.
- Emphasize rhythms and rhymes in stories. Give your toddler opportunities to repeat rhyming phrases.
- Encourage your child to repeat what you say or comment on it. Encourage your child to ask questions. Provide models of interesting questions and examples of possible answers: "I wonder what is going to happen next? I think the rabbit will get lost because he is not paying attention to where he is going. What do you think?"
- Look for books that are about things that interest your toddler. For example, does your child like cars, insects or animals?
- Give your child a chance to choose his own books for reading. If your toddler chooses a book that is too long to hold his attention, read some and skip some, discussing the pictures and how they relate to the story.
Read stories again and again. Your toddler enjoys repetition, and it helps her become familiar with the way stories are organized.

- If your child is curious and is making comments about letters, there is no reason why she should not become familiar with the alphabet before she starts school. Playing with alphabet blocks and singing "The Alphabet Song" are happy ways for your child to become acquainted with letters.
- Make books a joyous and important part of your child's life. Read to him every day. Let him talk about the stories. Ask questions about the pictures. Ask him to point out pictured objects that are alike and different in shape and in color. This activity helps children to observe small differences in the shapes of letters and words when learning to read.
- Avoid baby talk. Speak to your child in grownup language now, so she will recognize words she sees and hears in the classroom. Also, baby words for objects may be laughed at by the other youngsters.
- Provide a variety of experiences. Take your child to the zoo, the park, the airport. Teach your child the names of animals, flowers, etc. In order to understand the words encountered in reading, your child should have first-hand experience with the objects they stand for.
- From time to time, give your child simple, consecutive instructions. For example: "Pick up the ball, then bounce it, then put it on the table." Make a game out of it, if you like. Such activities will help your child develop memory skills and follow directions accurately, both of which are essential in school.
- Set a good example as a reader—read every day at home even if it is a magazine or newspaper.
- Make reading fun, a time that you both look forward to spending together.

  Sensible Gesture
Hb was touched by Sher's little gesture and he related to me about it.. Hb sprained his back and in the morning as usual, woke sher up to bring her to school. The lit' one obviously was whining away... (due to her late night sleeping) But, after daddy complained to her about his back pain, she got up and got to her usual morning routine. Daddy got into the shower and had a pleasant surprise when he got into the bedroom and discovered that Sher had managed to stow away the mattress and made the bed, got herself ready waiting for him. Even offered to soothe her daddy's back to relief him of the pain.

He gave her a hug and I must say even I thought it was so sweet and thoughtful of her. She now managed to empatise more and show more thoughtfulness for others close to her. I'm really glad that she's growing not just physically but also within the heart.

  Melaka Trip during long weekend

ChristChurch.. crowded after Sun service

See the long queue for the famous Chung Wah Chicken Rice Ball under the hot scorching sun... most well prepared with their brolly.

Artsy Cafe along Jonkers Street
Dip at the pool

Taking opportunity of the holiday and long weekend of deepavali, we organised this trip partly for Father-in-law's birthday celebration which happen to be on Halloween. We started our roadtrip early in the morning on Sunday and travelled through the 2nd link and tolls before reaching Melaka for lunch. Shervon slept almost throughout the journey and woke up when we were about to reach our destination. She 'entertained' the folks with her songs and played word games w us. It was jam packed with traffics & bustling as tourists and locals gathered around the popular town. I was disappointed when Chung Wah was super crowded and had queue that had almost 50 people in front of us. In the end, we decided to pack the chicken rice balls and head back to hotel. Took a walk along Jonkers Street as we need to wait for 1/2 hour for the chicken rice ball and settled for lunch along one of the less crowded shops.

By the time we checked in to Makhota Hotel, it was around 5pm. We changed into our swimming attire and took a dip at the pool, sher was estatic as there was a few kids pool where she could have fun. All in all, everyone was feeling relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. Then, we walked over to Newton Culture Centre for dinner as driving was not an option due to the heavy traffic... there goes my satay celup :( But, 'compensation' came in the form of Claypot rice. (the owner hung photos taken w Chris & Fann) It was sinfully good... we shared the portion and ordered a few other sides.

Then, we 'hatched' a plan to give Grandpa a surprise as Hb, Sher & myself went back to the mall again to search for a birthday cake which took us nearly an hour, we finally decided on an ice-cream cake from Baskin Robbins. Lucky thing, we bought the cake before the mall closed for the day. We got ready and lit the candle, reminded sher to shout HAPPY BIRTHDAY the moment grandpa opened the door... the plan went perfectly well as Grandpa opened the door and we sang birthday song ... and we were glad that the surprise plan fell in place nicely.
